THE NECESSARY MATERIALS
To complete this tutorial, you will need:
- 1 leather skin - 0.40 to 0.49 m² minimum surface area - approximately 1 mm thick
- 1 zipper - Mesh width: 6mm - Length: 20 cm
- 1 zipper - Mesh width: 6mm - Length: 45 cm
- Fabric (coated if possible) for the lining
And the following material:
- 1 cutter or scissors
- 1 sewing machine
- 1 spool of polyester thread no. 30 (diameter 0.41 mm)
- Double-sided tape
1. PRINT AND TRACE THE PATTERN
Download and print the actual size pattern.
Using a silver pencil, trace the pattern pieces. Mark the center of each piece with a silver pencil or by making a small 1 mm notch in the leather (see pattern). Also trace the pieces in the fabric lining, adding about 2 mm all around each piece (also mark the centers).
Please note that for part P2, you must transfer it once in one direction and once in the other direction in the fabric lining.

2. Cut out the different pieces
Cut out the different pieces of leather. Cut out the lining pieces (without forgetting the extra 2 mm all around each piece).

![]() |
For the handle (part P4), glue two pieces of leather together with leather glue. Then, cut out part P4.

3. Work the tongue and handle
Sew a decorative seam all around the P4 piece (handle).
Optional: work the handle slices.
Then, stitch the two lengths of piece P5. Fold the P5 tab in half and make a holding stitch at 2 mm.

4. Sew the small pocket
Place double-sided tape on the back of part P1 (at the opening for the small zipper).
Sew the back of the small zipper (length 20 cm) to the right side of one of the lengths of piece P3 (fabric pocket). The right side of your fabric should be inside the pocket; the outside will be hidden in the lining of the pencil case.

![]() |
Sew the right side of the second pocket piece (P3) to the wrong side of the second side of the zipper.
![]() |
![]() |
Cut off the excess zipper and separate the two pieces of the pocket on either side of the zipper. The zipper should be facing you (see photo).
Then, stick the P1 piece (leather) on the zipper using the double-sided tape.

![]() |
Stitch 2 mm all around the zipper (using the zipper presser foot).
![]() |
![]() |
Place the two pieces of fabric P3 on the same side (towards the bottom of piece P1). One of the pocket pieces will be longer than the other: overcut it so that the two pieces reach the same height.
Close the inside pocket by sewing the two pieces P3 together. Be careful not to sew the leather piece P1.

5. Sew the closure and lining
Place the right side of the zipper on the right side of piece P1 (top of the piece), center to center.
Hold with sewing clips and sew 5 mm from the edge.

![]() |
Place the right side of the lining piece P2 on the wrong side of the zipper (on the same side as the right side of the leather piece P1). Place the pieces center to center. Sew the lining 7 mm from the edge.
![]() |
![]() |
Place pieces P1 (leather) and P2 (lining) on the same side, then topstitch 3 mm from the edge.
![]() |
![]() |

Take the second side of piece P1 and assemble it right sides together on the other side of the zipper. As for the first side, sew 5 mm from the edge.

![]() |
Sew the right side of the lining to the wrong side of the zipper 7 mm from the edge.
![]() |
![]() |
Finally, topstitch 3 mm from the edge (as for the first side).
6. Assemble the lining bottoms
Place piece P1, with the grain of the leather facing you, then take the two pieces P2 (lining).
Assemble the two P2 pieces right sides together. Then sew the bottom, leaving a 17 cm gap so that the pencil case can be turned inside out later.

7. Close the two corners
Assemble the two “leather” sides of piece P1 right sides together.
![]() |
![]() |
Take the lining from the same side and sew it onto the side already sewn.
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
Do the same with the second side.

![]() |
![]() |
Don't forget to take the second end of the P4 handle and sew it to the side opposite the one where it is already sewn (see pattern). Make a holding stitch for the handle before closing the sides.
