Rounded-tip needle

The rounded-tip needle, also known as a harness needle, is designed to glide into an existing hole. It does not pierce the material, but it is essential for the saddle stitch technique. Thanks to it, there is no risk of pricking or injuring your fingers, and it is equally suitable for vegetable-tanned leathers, as well as for shoulders or double bends (less risk of scratching the material).

Pointed-tip needle

Conversely, the pointed-tip needle penetrates the material. If you want to work on soft or very thin leathers, make a reinforcement stitch, or attach a textile lining to leather, this is an excellent choice.

Triangle point needle

This one has three cutting edges. Instead of spreading the leather fibers, this leather sewing needle incises the material and creates a triangular micro-slit. This particular shape has the advantage of preventing the slit from tearing in a straight line under thread tension. You can opt for this product for glove making, slipper making, or even repair on thick leathers.

Curved needle

With its curved or half-moon shape, this model allows you to stitch and bring the needle out on the same side of the material (via a rotating wrist movement). By selecting this type of sewing needle, it is possible to repair sofas or cushions, but also to do invisible sewing (by stitching into the edge or thickness of the leather's grain without fully penetrating it).

Lacing needle (flat or round)

The lacing needle addresses a problem: a leather lace is too thick to be folded in half and threaded through the eye of a classic needle. With the lacing needle, it becomes easy to do edge-to-edge braiding, a Mexican border, or to create a decorative assembly with straps.

Understanding systems for leather sewing machines

You must ensure that your needle fits the mechanics of your leather sewing machine. Depending on the system used, the total length, the diameter of the shank, or the position of the eye may vary.

System 130/705 H

First, we have the 130/705 H system. This needle system is designed for beginner artisans or creators working at home. It is perfect for working on thin to medium leathers such as clothing or small leather goods.

System 134-35

This needle system is specifically designed for professional artisans. The needle is therefore more robust and the blade is thicker. The 134-35 system is capable of penetrating significant thicknesses such as thick vegetable-tanned leather, belts, or straps.

System 1738

Finally, there is the 1738 system, which corresponds to machines in manufacturing workshops. The shank is round and the needle is generally thinner than the 134-35 system. It is suitable for working with soft leathers, glove making, leather linings, and also wallets.

Choosing your leather sewing needles individually or in a set?

Acquiring leather sewing needles in a set is generally the most popular format. Indeed, this allows you to have sufficient stock to work on your creations with peace of mind. Needles dull, bend, and sometimes even break on leather. By buying in a set, you are therefore sure to always have spare needles. Moreover, saddle stitch (hand sewing leather) requires working with two needles simultaneously.

How to choose a sewing needle for leather?

To find the right leather sewing needle for your creative project, we recommend taking into account the following criteria:

The diameter (0.45 mm to 5 mm): This must match the thickness of the sewing thread used and your project: leather goods, saddlery...
The length (28.5 mm to 125 mm): It depends on the total thickness of the leather layers to be penetrated. While a long needle offers a better grip for pulling, it is also more likely to bend under stress.
The eye (hole): This is a very important element. A large eye is often sought after because it allows thick threads typical of leather to pass through.
