In a leather creation, certain materials play an essential role due to what they bring to the touch and comfort. Pig leather is one of them. It provides softness, flexibility, and uniformity, and complements finishes with precision.
At Deco Cuir, pig leather is available in whole hides, offered in various finishes and surfaces. It finds its place in projects where stability and ease of implementation are paramount, especially for lining, casing, or decorative elements.
Pigskin, a unique material
The structure of pigskin differs significantly from that of calf or cowhide. Thinner, it offers natural flexibility and good regularity across the entire surface. This thinness simplifies cutting and limits bulk, an important point in lining work or precise assembly.
Pigskin also has a more subtle grain. Its appearance remains uniform, without marked relief, which allows it to be easily integrated into various creations without drawing attention to the material itself. By nature, pig leather is more suitable for interior uses than for heavily used exterior parts.
A leather made for lining and casing
Pigskin is primarily used as lining leather due to its thinness, which allows it to line the inside of a bag, wallet, or case. In casing, pig leather adapts well to flat or slightly curved surfaces. It is used to cover the inside of boxes, cases, or display cases, where regularity and feel play a central role. For bookbinding, pigskin offers a flexible and easy-to-adjust surface, in line with works that require precision. In clothing as well as cushions, this type of leather provides a flexible, light, and pleasant material to work with.
Velvet finish: soft touch and suede look
A large part of the category consists of pig suede split leather hides. This finish has a soft touch, with an appearance similar to suede. Matte, the surface is particularly suitable for visible linings as well as areas that are often handled or that rub against the contents. It provides additional comfort and a warmer feel to the piece. Soft to the touch, pig suede is easy to handle, even on large surfaces.
Black, natural, brown, camel, chocolate, navy blue, or yellow: simple, familiar shades often found in linings and interior finishes. Dark, the leather remains understated. Light or vibrant, it stands out as soon as it is opened.
Glazed finish: a smooth and regular surface
With the glazed finish, the material changes register. The surface is smooth, with a slightly satiny appearance, without a shiny effect. A rendering that is especially noticeable with use: a surface that is easy to clean and maintains a regular appearance over time.
Offered in shades like duck green or apple green, this finish gives the color a more pronounced presence. Depending on the chosen combination, it creates a visible contrast with the main leather or brings a more assertive interior touch.
Pig leather: available formats and surfaces
Pigskin, as presented here, is available in whole hides, with surfaces ranging from 0.20 m² to almost 0.60 m² depending on the references. This format offers valuable material continuity for complete linings or projects requiring large seamless pieces.
The regularity of the surfaces facilitates cutting planning and limits waste. Slight differences appear from one hide to another, as this quality leather retains the marks of the animal and tanning. Each project therefore bears its mark.
Working with pigskin: Deco Cuir tips
Provided its thinness and flexibility are respected, pig leather can be worked without too much difficulty. Before cutting, it is preferable to lay the hide flat to avoid tension or deformation. The regular fiber promotes a clean cut, the blade remaining stable and less prone to rebound effect, with the various leather working tools.
When gluing, pigskin accepts classic leather glues well. Its surface, velvet or glazed depending on the finish, positions easily and remains stable once in place. When sewing, it passes easily under the presser foot. A fine to medium leather needle is suitable to avoid marking the material. With a slightly shorter stitch than usual and moderate tension, the seam remains uniform, without pulling or deforming the hide.
The selection of pig leathers offered on Deco Cuir brings together materials designed for lining, finishing, and ease of use. Discreet by nature, pigskin adds real functional value to the creation, without ever overshadowing the final piece.
