Depending on where the straps are stored and also the season (e.g. high temperatures), the leather can become very dry and therefore difficult to work with. We recommend nourishing the flesh side and edges with neatsfoot oil before any work (to prevent the grain from cracking). Do not nourish pull-up leather, oily leather, or leather that has already been nourished.
