What is split leather?
Split leather is the lower part of the hide, obtained after splitting full-grain leather. It is genuine leather with preserved natural qualities. It is distinguished by its velvety and soft appearance.
Unlike nubuck leather, which is sanded on the grain side (the outer surface of the hide), suede leather is obtained by sanding the split side. Both sides of the leather therefore have a velvety appearance.
One of the advantages of split leather is that the edges do not need to be worked. Unlike full-grain leather, whose edges must be trimmed, sanded, colored, or waxed to obtain a neat finish, the edge of suede split leather naturally presents a fibrous and matte appearance that integrates harmoniously with the aesthetic of the piece. You save precious time on each creation, without compromising on the final result. This is a particularly valuable asset for artisans who work in series or beginner creators who wish to obtain beautiful results quickly.

This suede calfskin split leather can be sewn with a high-performance domestic sewing machine, provided that not too many layers of material are superimposed at the seams. For more ambitious projects or series, a professional or semi-professional sewing machine is recommended to ensure regular stitching and avoid needle jolts. For machine sewing, we advise you to use a special leather needle, a Teflon foot, and a strong polyester thread. Always do a test on a scrap to see if your machine can sew the thicknesses before sewing your final piece.
How to care for suede leather?
Suede leather requires special attention to maintain its velvety appearance and softness over time. Here are the good practices to adopt for the care of your creations:
- Protect before use: Apply a special suede leather waterproofing spray to your creation before the first use. This will create a protective barrier against moisture and stains.
- Clean gently: A soft brush can restore the velvety feel and remove dust that can get embedded in the fibers. In case of a stain, use an eraser or a special nubuck/suede cleaner, rubbing gently in the direction of the nap. Avoid any unsuitable liquid product that could permanently stain the surface.
- Store away: Keep your creations away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent discoloration or deformation.
