Finishing a seam cleanly requires a good thread cutter! At Deco Cuir, you'll find two types of tools for leathercraft and sewing: metal thread snips, reliable and practical for all types of threads, and electric thread burners, essential for increasing speed and precision.
What is a thread cutter used for in sewing?
The thread cutter is the tool you always end up wishing you'd had sooner. Unlike scissors, this tool allows you to cut threads (linen, cotton, polyester, nylon) flush with the surface, without pulling, without unraveling, and without risking nicking the leather. Its compact shape makes it a valuable ally for all your sewing projects, both for professional leatherworkers and for those passionate about a job well done. A good thread cutter should be easy to handle and cut cleanly. It can be used for traditional saddle stitching as well as machine sewing.
How to choose a thread cutter suitable for leather sewing?
At Deco Cuir, we offer two types of thread cutters: metal and heated.
Metal thread snips: practical for all types of threads
Metal thread snips are the classic reference in any sewing workshop. Composed of two sharp blades, they cut threads flush with the leather or fabric. They won't break down because they don't require a power source.
There are different handle shapes to give you the most suitable grip for your working method.
The metal thread cutter has the advantage of being suitable for all types of threads (waxed linen, braided polyester, synthetics...).
For those who are just starting out or who work occasionally, the metal thread cutter is often the first tool to own. It will be your ally for finishing seams, fine details, and touch-ups. Its compact size is also very practical for keeping it always within reach and storing it easily in your sewing box.
Electric thread burner: for precise cutting without fraying
The electric thread burner works on a different principle: a heating element heats the tip to a high temperature to cut and heat-seal synthetic threads (polyester, nylon...). The result is immediate: the thread is cut cleanly, its end melted and sealed, with no possibility of fraying. Where a blade leaves a clean cut but one that may sometimes fray over time (depending on the type of thread), the heat welds the end in a fraction of a second. It replaces the use of a lighter, used to seal synthetic threads: an effective practice but less precise and potentially risky due to the flame.
The thread burners offered at Deco Cuir are battery-operated or rechargeable.
This type of thread cutter is reserved for synthetic threads (polyester, nylon). For linen or cotton thread, only a metal thread cutter should be used.
