This short, shiny calf hair leather will captivate you with its originality and exceptional quality. The beauty of Pony leather (finish) is striking at first glance!
What is pony hair leather?
Pony hair leather is an exceptional material for your creations. It is a calfskin whose grain side retains its natural coat, shaved uniformly short to obtain a smooth, shiny, soft-to-the-touch, and visually striking surface.
Contrary to what its name suggests, it does not come from a pony but from a calf; the term "pony" simply refers to the short-haired finish, reminiscent of a horse's coat. Pony leather is also known as pony skin, haircalf, or cavallino.
It is a prestigious material, long reserved for major fashion houses. Deco Cuir now offers a limited-quantity range, accessible to anyone looking to give a strong and audacious character to their creations.
What can you create with pony hair leather?
Pony calfskin lends itself to a wide variety of projects thanks to its workability and immediate visual impact. It is particularly appreciated for making bag flaps, pouches, wallets, shoes, decorative cushions, watch straps, and small fashion accessories where the hair side is highlighted.
Calf hair leather will bring a strong visual signature to your creations. Printed patterns (leopard, camouflage, military...) provide a strong graphic effect, while solid colors integrate into more refined creations.
Different types of hair-on hides
Deco Cuir offers two types of genuine hair-on hides, depending on the effect you are looking for:
Pony Calf Leather
Pony-type calf hair leather (cavallino) is popular in fine leather goods. Its very short, dense hair offers an elegant and shiny surface.
Shearling Sheepskin
Shearling leather retains the sheep's natural fleece. Thicker and softer, shearling is more commonly used for jackets, slippers, boots, costumes... Its feel is radically different from that of pony leather.
How to care for pony/cavallino leather?
To clean calf hair leather, we recommend using a soft brush in the direction of the hair.
Unlike smooth leather, the hair side should not be nourished with shoe polish or a nourishing cream. Thanks to its natural barrier formed by the hair, pony leather is naturally waterproof and resistant to small drops of water. However, it is sensitive to repeated rubbing, which could cause the hair to detach.
