Characteristics of Niagara saddle leather:
Niagara leather is nourished by immersion in a vat of tallow (a mixture of paraffin and beef fat), and is called "tallowed leather." This tallow bath gives the leather better water resistance, nourishes it over a long period, and makes it easier to cut and work. Tallowed leather is recommended for outdoor use.
Tallow allows for maintenance-free leather, as the grease is constantly released onto the surface, providing the necessary nourishment and a beautiful patina. Thanks to this nourishment, Niagara saddle leather offers advanced resistance to outdoor use, repelling all external factors (water, salt environments, animal perspiration). This saddle leather is therefore suitable for intensive wear and tear, such as equestrian activities. The aniline finish allows the dyed leather to retain its natural appearance.
Embossing Niagara leather is not recommended, because with its oil bath treatment, the leather will regain its natural thickness, and the embossed patterns will fade over time.
Niagara saddle leather care tips:
Thanks to the tallow bath treatment, the grease is infused throughout the entire thickness of the Niagara saddle leather, so no further treatment is needed over time. A treatment can be applied to the grain side to maintain its oily appearance or accelerate the leather's patina. This grain treatment ensures a longer lifespan. Our Niagara saddle leather is resistant to humidity. Simply allow it to dry at room temperature to restore its appearance. Due to the tallow bath treatment (grease), a whitish film of paraffin wax may form during temperature changes. Simply rub it off to remove it.
