To smooth the crusty side: Apply a finishing gum (Tokonole, gum arabic, gum tragacanth...) then press on the leather with the smoother so that the skin becomes smooth.
This tool can also be used to smooth leather during gluing, to eliminate small unwanted marks, or to clearly define creases. It allows you to stretch the leather during gluing: it is essential for removing air bubbles between surfaces. It smooths the leather to prevent creases.
