Butt leather is made up of the shoulder and the croupon, allowing for long lengths of straps (see diagram).
Niagara leather, nourished by immersion in a suet vat (a mixture of paraffin and beef fat), is called "greased leather". This suet bath gives the leather better water resistance, nourishes it over a long period, and facilitates cutting and working the leather. Greased leather is recommended for outdoor use.
The suet ensures that the leather is maintenance-free since the fat is consistently released onto the surface of the leather, providing it with the necessary nourishment and an excellent patina. Thanks to this nourishment, Niagara saddle leather has advanced resistance for outdoor use, repelling any external disturbances (water/saline environment). This saddle leather is therefore suitable for intensive wear, such as in the equestrian sector. The aniline finish allows the dyed leather to retain its natural appearance.
Uses of the dyed Niagara butt leather strap :
The dyed Niagara butt leather strap can be used in leather goods, especially when you need long lengths of leather: belts, bag handles, bracelets, watch straps, dog and cat collars, etc.
It is the most sought-after leather for making belts due to its natural finish, its resistance to elongation, and its nourishment, which ensures a long lifespan.
It can also be used for harness parts: halters, bridles, harness, bridle reins, headstalls, cheek pieces, browbands, nosebands, lead ropes, throat latches, and girths.
For a perfect finish of the edges of Niagara saddle leather, we recommend applying an edge finish.
Tooling on our Niagara leather is not recommended because, due to its grease bath nourishment, the leather will return to its natural thickness and the embossed patterns will fade over time.
Care tips for dyed Niagara butt leather straps:
For the care of Niagara saddle leather, thanks to the suet bath nourishment, the fat is impregnated throughout the entire thickness of the Niagara saddle leather, so no additional nourishment is needed over time. Nourishment can be applied to the grain to maintain its oily appearance or accelerate the leather's patina. This care of the grain ensures a longer lifespan. Our Niagara saddle leather will resist humidity. Simply let it dry at room temperature for it to return to its original appearance. Due to its suet bath (grease) nourishment, a whitish film of paraffin may appear on the surface during temperature changes. Simply rub it to make it disappear.
