Butt leather is made from the neck and the rump, which allows for long lengths of straps (see diagram).
Niagara leather, nourished by immersion in a tallow vat (a mixture of paraffin and beef fat), is called "greased leather". This tallow bath gives the leather better water resistance, nourishes it for a long period, and facilitates cutting and working with the leather. Greased leather is recommended for outdoor use.
The tallow allows for maintenance-free leather since the fat is constantly released to the surface of the leather, providing the necessary nourishment and an excellent patina. Thanks to this nourishment, Niagara saddle leather has advanced resistance to outdoor use; it will repel all external disturbances (water / saline environment). This saddle leather is therefore suitable for intensive wear, such as in the equestrian sector. The aniline finish allows the dyed leather to retain its natural appearance.
Uses of the dyed Niagara butt leather strap:
The dyed Niagara butt leather strap can be used in leather goods, especially when you need long lengths of leather: belts, bag handles, bracelets, watch straps, dog and cat collars, etc.
It is the most sought-after leather for making belts thanks to its natural finish, its resistance to elongation, and its nourishment which guarantees a long lifespan.
It can also be used for harness parts: halters, bridles, harnesses, reins, headstalls, uprights, browbands, nosebands, lead ropes, throat latches, and girths.
For a perfect finish of the edges of Niagara saddle leather, we recommend applying an edge finish.
Tooling on our Niagara leather is not recommended because, with its nourishment from the grease bath, the leather will return to its natural thickness, and the embossed patterns will fade over time.
Maintenance tips for dyed Niagara butt leather straps:
For the maintenance of Niagara saddle leather, thanks to the nourishment from the tallow bath, the fat is impregnated throughout the thickness of the Niagara saddle leather, so no nourishment is needed over time. Nourishment can be applied to the grain to maintain its greasy appearance or accelerate the leather's patina. This care of the grain ensures a longer lifespan. Our Niagara saddle leather will resist humidity. Simply let it dry at room temperature to restore its appearance. Due to its nourishment from the tallow bath (grease), a whitish film of paraffin can form on the surface due to temperature shocks. Simply rub it to make it disappear.
