FINISHING GUM FOR VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER
Tragacanth gum, also known as gum tragacanth, is obtained from the dried sap of a shrub species from the Astragalus family.
This natural tragacanth gum will allow you to smooth the edges of natural leathers or colored leathers that have been vegetable tanned.
In addition to waterproofing the edge, tragacanth gum will give an antique look to the leather edges.
Instructions for use (see video):
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Apply a thin layer of the product to the edge/trim with a brush or applicator pad, wait a few moments, then vigorously rub the edge with a cloth or a burnisher. The tragacanth gum dries and heats up with friction, causing the edge to darken and shine
- Repeat the operation until the desired smoothness is achieved
- Clean tools with soap and water
You can also use tragacanth gum on the flesh side of a fuzzy leather (mineral or vegetable tanning) to bind the fibers.
Tip: Tint the tragacanth gum with water-based dye (see video).
What is the difference between tragacanth gum and gum arabic?
Gum arabic and tragacanth gum are obtained by the same process but do not come from the same sap. Unlike tragacanth gum, gum arabic is water-soluble, which explains why tragacanth gum is much more liquid. These two gums are applied in the same way, but gum arabic gives a slightly darker result.
Color: Neutral, but will brown during application
Deco Cuir Info: Small flakes may form in the product, without affecting its quality. They dissipate during application.
