A former is the essential tool if you want to work with natural vegetable tanned leather .
This excellence form is made by Jérôme David in France. The type of wood used is French boxwood from sustainable PEFC-certified forests.
Boxwood was chosen by our ancestors to make this tool because it is one of the hardest woods and thus allows us to mark the leather without wearing out. It will patina over time and thus become your favorite tool.
The use of the former allows you to mark a line on the edge of the leather, either to make a decoration , or to make a line thus allowing you to then create a very straight seam . In addition, the small groove pushed back helps guide the sewing thread. To embed the seam in order to protect it from possible friction, it is recommended to use a tree frog which will remove material by digging a small furrow.
This tool has four notches which allow you to make four different shaper lines. Each formwork line has an identical thickness (approximately 1 mm) but it is the space between the edge of the leather and the line that changes. This tool allows you to make a line 1.8 - 2.2 - 2.7 and 3.3 mm from the edge.
To create decorative lines, you can make a double line by making a line at 1.8 mm then another at 2.7 mm.
