The origin, manufacturing, and uses of nappa leather
According to legend, nappa leather was developed at the end of the 19th century in a tannery located in California, in the Napa region. Made from bovine hides, this full-grain leather is also produced from lamb or goat hides. Nappa leather is characterized by its fineness and suppleness. It undergoes a treatment that protects it.
It is this specific mineral tanning that gives nappa leather its unique properties. It allows the hide to retain and fix colored dyes more easily. Thus, this leather is less likely to see its shade change over the years.
Thanks to its high quality, nappa leather is used particularly for leather goods, the manufacture of leather jackets, and automotive upholstery.
Differences with aniline leather
Deco Cuir offers aniline and nappa lamb leathers to meet your needs for soft and supple hides, within your budget.
Aniline leather
Aniline lamb leather refers to a hide that has been colored by immersion without being protected. These lamb hides without additional finish are called aniline leathers. Only the most beautiful, flawless hides are used to make aniline leathers.
Particularly supple and very soft, they remain more fragile than those that have received a finish. They are characterized by a natural touch and develop a patina over time.
Nappa leather
Also known as veiled leather, this material undergoes a treatment (the semi-aniline finish) that makes it waterproof and sun-resistant. Drier than aniline leather, nappa leather is supple and offered at affordable prices.
Nappa leather retains its soft touch and natural density because it is vacuum-dried. The rapid evaporation of water prevents fats from escaping the fibers. The semi-aniline treatment of nappa leather gives it its perfectly smooth surface.

Working with nappa leather offers you the benefits of this material:
- elasticity and stretchability
- resistance to deformation and wear

Single pieces or in lots
Our nappa leather collection consists of single hides of a defined surface, lots of hides in specified shades, and surprise lots. Surprise lots are made up of a fixed number of reduced-price lamb leather hides from clearance sales. The description of these lots specifies the average surface and thickness of the pieces, as well as the possible presence of slight defects. The finish is mainly smooth, and the colors are not known when ordering. To vary your creations, browse our selection of lamb hides, which includes fancy lamb hides (metallic, velvet, reptile imitation...) and grained lamb hides. You will also find all the solutions for cleaning them.
